introduction | van; matthew; benjamin Today many films like Finding Nemo, Iron Man, or Transformers have great visuals and or graphics that makes the impossible real. Today's technological innovations have roots from early technology. This early technology can be seen in the films created in the Edison's Studio. The Edison studio allowed inspirational ideas of story telling to be seen as a moving picture. The Old Edison Studio was originally located at West Orange County, New Jersey. This studio was build in 1892-93. The second of the Studio was build in 1901. It was located in 41 East 21st Street Manhattan. The third and most successful studio was build in the Bronx in 1907. It was located in Decatur Avenue and Oliver Place. Out of three studios, the Studio in the Bronx can be considered the most sucessful because of it's geographical placing, many features and production of different type of films.

The Studio created in West Orange, New Jersey was known as the Black Maria, or the Kinetographic Theater. The Studio was covered in tarpaper. It had a resemblance of a police wagon. It had a huge opening on the ceiling to receive sunlight. This was necessary because films created back then required tremendous amount of sunlight. An interesting fact about the studio is that the studio was built on top of a pivot making it possible to rotate to capture the sunlight at different times of the day. The studio was referred to as the paddy wagon. Edison refers to it as the doghouse.
The second studio was created in Manhattan. This studio was
For many reasons, Edison moved his studio to the Bronx because of higher demands for fictional films. By all means, this reason required for wider range of geographic surrounding and even more features. Here at the Bronx studio the building was a thirty-five feet concrete building that is hundred by sixty. The studio gave them an advantage because Van Cortlandt Park was a common place where his productions were filmed. Comparing to the other two studio, this Studio gave them more opportunities to film different kind of films and more realistic films that takes place elsewhere, other than infront of a painted background. Because the studio was bigger, and was concrete, it gave them more dark places to preserve their films.

As the Edison Studio locations kept changing from New Jersey to Manhattan, and Manhattan to the Bronx, new features were seen that made the studios advanced. The West Orange Edison studio was the beginning. This place had a recording studio that made it possible for shooting scenes of magic shows, plays boxing matches, cockfights, etc. This studio also had one of the best research and development laboratories. An architect Henry Hudson Holly created a six building lab complex big for 200 men. In this lab, Holly made motion pictures, improvements of his phonograph invention, and developing experiments with alkaline batteries. The West Orange studio also had factories that could manufacture the inventions they made. Muckers came from European countries to help develop these inventions. They even said the labs were Edison’s greatest inventions. However there that good features to create the fictional type of films with a narrative, so the move to the Manhattan, New York was made.
The move to Manhattan proved to be a next step in the Edison Films. Good features were also present when the studio was moved to Manhattan. One feature was the use of the Kinetoscope to make the films. Another feature was the sound stages that were about 100 feet in size. It also had 14 cutting rooms and 20 dressing rooms. This studio also contained Carpenter shops and set storage facilities. Problems that consisted of the studio moving included that the sound studios creating small sound-recording establishments, when they needed genuine motion picture studios. Also the noise from the busy streets These features and others would be seen in the later move to the Bronx.

The great move to the Bronx was probably the superlative move for the Edison Studios. The Studio in the Bronx made many films great with the advanced features they had. One of these features included that the sound stages were larger than the ones from Manhattan. The Bronx Studio had 100 foot by 75 foot sound stages. This studio was larger than the other two. This made room for things such as dressing rooms for the actors, technical facilities for the electrical purposes, and a library. This new studio had many prop/costume, mob, and projection rooms inside it. If you ever needed water scenes for films, the Bronx Studio was where to go. The studio had a water room on the lower level. In order to pump the water into the studios, there was a huge tank with water filled inside. Along with these features were vintage bathtubs in these studios. Comparing these three locations, you can see the advancements and progressions from West Orange to the Bronx to make better films.

The old edison studio located at west orange new jersey was where all the film magic began. The first films ever shot at this studio were in a tar-paper-covered, dark studio room with a retractable roof. These films included segments of magic shows, plays, vaudeville performances, acts from buffalo bills wild west show, various boxing matches and cockfights and scantily clad women. However the basis of movies made in edison's black maria were non- fictional fims that were actualities. These types of films were basically films about real life or "slices of ordinary life". For example edison would have films of, street scenes, shots of a train passing by and the activities of a policeman or a firefighter. After the era of actuality films edison decided to start shooting commercials at his studio in New Jersey. Edison opened up an Edison Kinetoscope which began commercial operation and soon after many others followed in his footsteps and opened up their own kinetoscope parlor. Then edison soon after decided to move to a new studio in manhattan for various reasons.
The second Edison studio was located in Manhattan on 41st East 21st Street. This indoor studio was home to many notable productions and films. Some of the many films created at this studio are an Old Maid Having Her Picture Taken, High Diving Scene, Phototgraphing a Country Couple, What Happened on Twenty-Third Street, New York City and Trapeze Disrobing Act. Old Maid Having Her Picture Taken was a vaudeville acted out by Gilbert Saroni, whoimpersonated an old hideous maid that was so unattractive when she confronted mirrors they cracked. High Diving Scene was a film of a daredevil act that was created to draw crowds at amusement resorts which often worked. Photographing a Country Couple was a film of a photographer who was about to take a portrait of a couple when a rube wants to look through the camera. Then they switch places and the photographer shows the rube what he wansts him to do and kisses his girl. Then some bad boy comes and ties the rube up to the camera tripod and the end result is chaos. What Happened on Twenty-Third Street, New York City was at first a fim of an ordinary street scene, but then a man and a woman walk by and the woman's dress unexpectedly blows up. Trapeze Disrobing Act was a production of a "risque disrobing act on the flying trapeze", which was basically a striptease. These are some of the many innovative films created in Edison's studio in manhattan. After moving to manhattan Edison moved once again to a new studio in the bronx.
